Metcalf 는 풍경을 주로 그린 미국의 인상파 화가(1858-1925) 입니다.  윌러드 릴로이 메트칼프(1858-1925)는 당시 미국의 동부 해안지방에 널리 이름난 인상주의 화가인 동시에 오래토록 미술교사를 지냈으며 일러스터의 일도 하였다. 그는 특히 프랑스 <모네>가 살고 있었던 지베르니를 처음으로 방문한 미국 화가로서 유명하다. 그는 정기적으로 지베르니를 방문하여 장기간에 걸쳐 거주하면서 모네와 우정을 나누었다. 그 때, 지베르니 마을은 미국화가들이 집단을 형성하여 서로 협력하고 지냈으며 그림활동이나 생활에 있어 속박에서 벗어나 자유분망한 분위기였다. 이러한 화가들은 나중에 미국으로 귀국하여서도 같은 그림 단체와 모임을 형성하여 나갔다 . 미국 인상주의 대표적인 그룹인 <10인 화가회(The Ten)>를 창설하였고 미국의 <사실주의>와 프랑스의 <인상주의>를 결합하여 미술계의 문예부흥을 이룬다 .      Cavalleria Rusticana Intermezzo
