Lord Frederick Leighton은 영국태생으로 Royal Academy의 회원으로 20년 이상 의장직을 지낼 정도로 유명인사였다. 할아버지는 러시아의 활실 담당 의사, 아버지 역시 의사였고, 상당히 부유하게 살아 어릴적 부터 독일 이탈리아등 을 돌아다니며 살았다. 어릴 적부터 부유한 환경 속에서 자랐고, 화가로서도 더할 나위 없는 지위와 부를 가졌다. 평생 독신으로 살면서 완벽에 가까운 여성상을 그려낸 듯한 그의 그림을 보고, 혹자는 현세에 자기 눈에 차는 여자가 없어 마치 피그말리온처럼 미적 이상형을 그리는데 탐닉했다고 얘기하기도 한다. 요크셔(州) 스카버리 출생. 처음 피렌체를 비롯하여 로마, 브뤼셀, 파리 등지를 전전하면서 그림 공부를 하다가 1855년 런던의 로열 아카데미를 통해 호평을 받아 유명해졌다. 1860년 런던으로 자리를 옮긴 뒤부터는 점차 고대 그리스의 신화 등을 소재로 다룬 탐미적인 작품활동을 하였다. 조각가로서도 유명하며 대표작에 <큰 뱀과 싸우는 운동가>등이 있다. 1878년에 로열아카데미의 회장직을 맡아 일하였으며, 1896년에는 화가로서 처음으로 귀족 칭호를 받았다. 역작에 <프시케의 목욕> <아가멤논 묘의 엘렉트라>등이 있다. 웹싸이트 옮김
