애덤스 [Adams, John Ottis, 1851~1927]
1851년 인디애나주 아미티에서 출생하였다. 초기 인상주의(바르비종파)의 영향을 받은 인디애나 화가 가운데 한 사람이다. 워배시대학에서 공부하였고, 런던 사우스켄싱턴미술학교에서 그림을 배웠다. 1880년 독일로 가 뮌헨왕립아카데미에서 공부하였다.
독일에서 T.스틸레, S.리처즈 등 인디애나 출신의 화가들과 함께 '후지어 콜로니(Hoosier Colony)'를 설립하였다. 미국으로 돌아와 먼시에 스튜디오를 세웠는데, 나중에 W.포사이스도 이 그룹에 참여하였다.
초기에는 어두운 색조의 농촌 풍속화를 주로 그렸으나, 1890년대 이후부터 빛의 특질과 반사를 탁월한 솜씨로 묘사한 인상주의 화풍의 작품을 발표하였다. 1899년 가족과 함께 자연경치가 뛰어난 브룩빌로 이주하여 스틸레와 함께 작품활동을 하였다.
《양귀비 꽃밭 In Poppyland》(1901), 《여름날 오후 A Summer Afternoon》(1902), 《청색과 황금색 Blue & Gold》(1904), 《접시꽃 옆의 소녀 Little Girl With Hollyhocks》, 《여름철 Summer Time》(1890), 《무지개빛 얕은 개울 Iridescence of a Shallow Stream》(1902) 등의 작품이 있다.
