밀레이는 화가로서의 명성뿐 아니라 모델과의 로맨스로도
당대를 떠들썩하게 했던 화가 상대는 유명한 존 러스킨의 아내인 에피
( 화가론으로도 유명하시고 <참깨와 백합>을 쓴 그 러스킨)
유명 평론가가 라파엘 전파를 지지한 것은 고마운 일이었고. 우정이 시작됩니다.
그런데 밀레이는 러스킨의 아내를 모델로 그림을 그리다가 사랑에 빠지게 되죠.
결국 에피 러스킨은 남편과 이혼하고 결혼만은 말아달라는
러스킨의 부탁에도 불구하고 두 사람은 결혼을 합니다.(마지막 그림의 여인)
러스킨과 결혼 기간동안 단 한번도 성적인 접촉이 없었다는
소문이 전해져 오는데..그렇다면 러스킨이 동성애자였을까요.
비난을 피해 사랑을 정당화하려는 에피의 거짓말이었을까요.
숨막히는 도덕관을 가졌던 빅토리아 여왕 시대에 유부녀와 화가의 사랑.
그리고 이혼과 재혼은 엄청난 화제였다고 하는군요.
밀레이는 당대 최고의 초상화가로 인정받고 있었지만 보수적이고 가정적이셨던
빅토리아 여왕은 이 스캔들을 못마땅해 해서 밀레이기
자신의 초상화를 그리는 걸 거부했다고 합니다.
로맨틱한 라파엘 전파의 화가와 시인들에게는 그림만큼 로맨틱한 이야기들도 많고
밀레이의 그림을 보면 낭만적이면서도 마음속에서 상상을 불러일으키는
이야기를 품은 그림들이 많습니다.
꽃바구니를 든 어린 소녀는 배가 불러 있어요.. 어떤 사연일까
소녀가 읽고 있는 바닷가에 실려온 병 속의 편지에는 과연 뭐라고 써 있을까요..
핑크색 모자의 여인은 추운듯 쇼올을 꼭 싸매고 있어요.
누굴 애타게 기다리고 있는 걸까요.
클라리사가 외면하며 손으로 찢는 종이에는 과연 뭐라고 쓰여있을까요.
어린 동생은 앞 못보는 언니에게 무지개를 어떻게 설명할까요.
