When some great sorrow, like a mighty river,

Flows through your life with peace-destroying power

And dearest things are swept from sight forever,

Say to your heart each trying hour:

“This, too, shall pass away.”

 

슬픔이 거센 강물처럼 그대의 삶으로 밀려와 잔잔한 마음의

평화를 산산이 조각내고 소중한 것들을 앗아가 버릴 때

고통으로 공허한 그대 가슴에 대고 말하라.

‘이것 또한 지나가리라.’

 

When ceaseless toil has hushed your song of gladness,

And you have grown almost too tired to pray,

Let this truth banish from your heart its sadness,

And ease the burdens of each trying day:

“This, too, shall pass away.”

 

쉼 없는 힘든 일들이 네 감사의 노래마저 멈추게 하고

기도도 못할 만큼 지칠 때면 이 진실의 말로 하여금

네 마음에서 슬픔을 사라지게 하고 힘겨운

하루의 무거운 짐으로부터 벗어나게 하라.

‘이것 또한 지나가리라’

행운이 그대에게 미소 짓고 기쁨과 환희로 가득할 때

하루하루가 근심 걱정 없는 날들로 넘쳐날 때

세속적인 기쁨에 젖어 편히 안주하지 않도록

이 몇 마디 말의 진실을 가슴에 새기라.

삶속에 가장 오랫동안 또 가장 웅대했던 전설도
